Duerr, Howley Named 2023 Heidrick Family Scholarship Recipients

DURHAM – Duke student-athletes Emmy Duerr and Caroline Howley were named recipients of the Heidrick Family Leadership Post Graduate Scholarships, the Blue Devil Athletic Department announced Tuesday.

The Heidrick Family Leadership Post Graduate Scholarships were established through a generous gift by Bob Heidrick and his family. The recipients are chosen not only for what they have contributed to the leadership community within Duke Athletics but also by who they are as people, how they have grown in the area of leadership and how they have used their leadership development to enhance the community during their undergraduate career at Duke University.

The selection is viewed as an investment in the individual rather than on the athletic accomplishment of the individual. It is the investment in the excellence of his/her character, in the qualities of leadership possessed by the individual, commitment to others and the potential for service through outstanding leadership in the future.

Two Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $10,000 each to two graduating Duke student-athletes. The funds are to be applied toward the continuation of their academic endeavors at the graduate or professional school level.  Funds must be used within three years of each recipient's graduation from Duke University.

A native of Cary, N.C., Duerr appeared in 57 matches over the last four years, including four starts.  She tallied four goals, two assists and 10 points over her career.  In the NCAA Tournament as a freshman against Utah, Duerr collected two goals, including the game-winner to send the Blue Devils into the second round.  She is one of only two Duke players to register their first two career goals in NCAA Tournament action.

During her time at Duke, Duerr has been heavily involved in the Team Impact program as a fellow.  She was very impactful in increasing team matches and Duke being named Team Impact Campus of the Year in 2023.  Duerr is also a member of the College Athlete Pre-Medical Experience (CAPE) program, while involved in the Duke Athlete Ally, Morgan's Message and the Captain's Leadership programs as well.  She also received the ACC Top Six for Service Award in 2020.

Howley has been a member of the Duke track & field and cross country team for the past four seasons, primarily competing in distance events. She has competed at 23 meets in her Duke career, including back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Southeast Regional (XC) and the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, while most recently setting PR's in the 4K (14:05.7) and 6K (21:47.9) during the 2022 cross country season.

The McLean, Va., product has served as the women's cross country representative for the Duke Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Boards (DEIB), respectively, since 2019. As a member of SAAC, Howley has helped facilitate professional development and community service opportunities while her time with DEIB has seen her aid in the development of framework to implement as well as participate in a task force devoting attention to DEIB within Duke Athletics. She has also served as the Event Management Director (Spring 2022-Present) and the Internal Marketing Director (Spring 2021-22) for the Duke Sports Business Club, assisting with coordinating logistics including IT requirements, budget, and liaising with University Staff, to organize Duke's Sports Business Conference and associated events.
