Friendship Series: Avery & Sydney, Boston University Women’s Hockey

When Avery first joined the Boston University hockey team, no one could have imagined just how powerful the connection would become. Avery, who lives with partial paralysis following a stroke, was welcomed into the Terrier family with open arms—and what blossomed was something extraordinary: a bond rooted in pure friendship, unwavering support, and team spirit.

For Avery’s parents, Kris and Michelle, the impact has been clear from day one. “Pure friendship. Constant contact and genuine caring communication,” Kris said when reflecting on the experience. “Avery has more self-confidence and more self-worth since joining the Terriers.”

From cheering in the stands to celebrating big wins—like BU’s unforgettable Hockey East Championship victory—Avery has been part of it all. Some of her favorite memories include hanging out on the bench during warm-ups, having pregame chats with the team, and celebrating big wins. It’s those small, meaningful moments that show just how deeply she’s woven into the team’s culture.

At the heart of this friendship is BU student-athlete Sydney Healey, who has gone above and beyond as a mentor, teammate, and friend; so when Team IMPACT began collecting nominations for Teammate of the Year, Avery and her family knew Sydney was exactly the teammate in mind.

“Sydney exemplifies what it means to be a Team IMPACT teammate,” said Kris. “She has been so welcoming and amazing to Avery and to our entire family, including Avery’s sister, Mia. Sydney, the entire women’s team, the coaches, the staff, the athletics department, and the university have been so welcoming and really embraced her.” Avery has her very own locker in the team’s locker room and celebrates with her teammates after every win. But this relationship goes far beyond game days—Sydney is even helping Avery learn how to skate. “Avery becoming part of this team has shown her the value in being a teammate.

Through Team IMPACT, Avery has found a community that sees her, values her, and cheers her on both on and off the ice. This is more than just a match—it’s a lifelong friendship.
