When Emery joined the Utah Valley University basketball team through Team IMPACT in July 2024, she wasn’t just matched with a group of athletes—she became part of something bigger: a sisterhood that lifted her up when she needed it most. And at the center of that bond was Danja Collins, a teammate whose compassion, leadership, and heart left a lasting mark.
Emery was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2023 and has spent much of her young life navigating treatments and hospital stays; but through those ups and downs, Danja remained a constant. When Danja was younger, her little brother was diagnosed with cancer, so she understands firsthand the challenges Emery and her family can face with this diagnosis. She reached out with encouraging messages, showed up with thoughtful surprises, and made sure Emery always knew she had someone in her corner. Whether it was inviting her to sit with the team during games, celebrating her birthday, or checking in when she was too sick to attend events, Danja’s support never wavered.
When Team IMPACT opened nominations for Teammate of the Year, Emery and her family immediately thought of Danja. From the start, Danja has been more than a teammate—she’s been a steady friend and a bright light during some of Emery’s hardest moments. Emery’s nomination video captures just how much their bond has meant to Emery and why Danja’s impact will never be forgotten.
The entire Utah Valley team embraced Emery, but Danja made it personal. She added Emery’s photo to the team’s “wall of inspiration” and would send her videos from practices and team outings just to let her know she was missed. “Danja has truly been an angel during this difficult time in Emery’s life,” said Emery’s mom, Talia. “She shows support through kind messages, surprise gifts, and treating Emery like a little sister.”
“She made Emery feel so special,” Talia said. “You could tell it isn’t something she is doing because she had to—she truly cares.”
Over time, that care helped Emery come out of her shell. The once-quiet girl who walked into the gym unsure of what to expect began to blossom. With Danja’s encouragement, she grew more confident, more connected, and more herself. The relationship didn’t just change Emery’s experience, it changed her outlook.
Even as Danja graduates and moves on to her next chapter, the impact of her friendship remains. She’s left behind more than memories—she’s left behind a legacy of kindness and leadership. And for Emery, that’s something she’ll carry with her forever.
