Friendship Series: Joe & Caedmon, Indiana Wesleyan Basketball

In November of 2023, Joe became a proud member of the Indiana Wesleyan basketball team. Joe, who lives with an anoxic brain injury following an accident in 2021, quickly found himself embraced by a community that values connection, teamwork, and unwavering support. Among the many friendships he’s built, his bond with redshirt junior forward Caedmon Bontrager stands out from the rest.

“From the beginning, Joe and Caedmon developed a close bond,” Ashley said. “Joe was impressed by Caedmon’s jumping ability, incredible dunks, and, according to Joe, the second-best hair on the team—just behind his own.” What started with admiration soon grew into a genuine friendship rooted in mutual respect, shared laughs, and a deep sense of belonging.

“Caedmon, a quiet and humble leader, embodies the ‘I am third’ team culture,” Joe’s mom, Ashley, said, ‘putting God and others above himself.” Caedmon often one of the first players to greet Joe at practice or games, chat with him, and make sure he feels like an essential part of the team. But Caedmon’s support doesn’t stop when the final buzzer sounds. “He frequently lifts Joe up in prayer, checks on him, and shared uplifting videos. He leads with integrity, always doing the right thing when no one is watching and without seeking recognition.”

So, it was no surprise that when it came to nominating a Teammate of the Year, Joe and Ashley knew Caedmon was their guy.

Joe’s involvement with the Wildcats has extended beyond the men’s basketball program as well. He’s formed friendships with members of the women’s basketball team and built a close relationship with Coach, who always makes time for him. For Joe, this is more than being part of a team—it’s being part of a family.
